Ketchikan & heading towards Tracy Arm Fjord–Tuesday

The formal dinner last night was! There were very few people who weren’t dressed up. It was worth carrying the suit after all. (Rick looked stunning! – Gill)

We arrived at Ketchikan in the small hours of this morning (anything before 7am are small hours). We were up soon after 7:30, had breakfast (yes, more food) and got off the boat to explore. There are more boats registered here than there are cars. There are also many sea planes. We followed a self guided walk around the town rather than take an organised tour. We were glad that we did, otherwise we wouldn’t have had time to see what we did. I’m sure that the tours were very good as well, but it’s nice to do our own thing. The town itself is mostly very attractive with many timber houses and other buildings. The area with the most character was Creek Street, originally the red light and speakeasys district. It was also great to get off the boat and get clean, fresh air and walk on land. Coffee and free wifi!

Does this local have any issues?

Back to the boat ready for a 2:30 departure. Some people arrived after 2.30, running madly to the gangway. We were lucky to find a table beside the window to have lunch at and to watch the town slip away (or was that us slipping away?). We heard that very recently a cruise boat hit the wharf and put one of the 4 cruise berths out of action.

We’re heading for Tracy Arm Fjord now and we arrive around 5 am tomorrow. It is supposed to be spectacular with a glacier. We leave around 9 am, so it will be a very early rise. Being outside would be good, but it will be very cold.

At the moment we’re optimistically staring out across the water looking for whales.

  1. Our memory of Ketchikan was lots of rain, and Creek Street (very pretty) was more like Creek River!
Looks like great weather - worth getting outside in the cold to see the glaciers and stunning views up close.
Sounds and looks fantastic so far.
