It was an early get up this morning to make sure that we saw the Tracy Arm Fjord and the glacier at the end. It was worth it. As with everything else we’ve seen, it was spectacular. We left around 9 am and headed towards Juneau, the capital of Alaska. We’re told that the only way to get to Juneau is by air or sea, that there are no roads in. Seems unusual for a capital city, but as technology changes, outside communication and dealings become much easier.
It wasn’t overly cool and the day turned out to be fine, blue, sunny and warm. We carried our jackets and jumpers just in case, but didn’t need them. Our first stop (perhaps detour) was to get into the aerial tramway and go up the hill for spectacular views, local Tlingit tribe (one of the First Nations) film, a short musical performance by the “Alaskan Strings”, a family quintet, and a visit to the resident Bald Eagle.
We wandered through the town, another mostly attractive town with many coloured timber buildings. Found a good coffee shop, “Heritage Roasted Coffee”. Back to the ship for dinner, many people were still on shore excursions so we had many choices as to where to eat. We went back to the Michelangelo restaurant again, much better food than the main food court.
Juneau, like other towns along the passage, is built on the narrow flat between the water and the mountains, and a little way up the mountains. There are many steep stairs to get to the upper levels.
